The birth of Smart-M

Pneumatic edge knockers, hoovers, compressors. Just a small sample of the products Smart-M used to make. In fact, Smart-M did not always produce ferrous and non-ferrous semi-finished products.

1966, more than three years before America landed on the moon, is the year Machinefabriek Ad Frederiks was founded. In a factory building of 88 square metres, four employees work on Frederiks products.

The machine factory stands out because it has developed a machine that cuts cheese in two versions. Namely, the hydraulically operated machine cuts the cheese into weight pure wedges or blocks. Previously, this was still done by hand.

The premises in Kaatsheuvel on Hoofdstraat, proved too small after two years and Machinefabriek Ad Frederiks moved to the beautiful industrial estate "de Kets" in Kaatsheuvel. Frederiks now has a self-built premises that is at least four times bigger than before.

Turning, building and construction work. Frederiks is acquired and continues under the name Machinefabriek Molendijk. Molendijk starts focusing on ferrous and non-ferrous semi-finished products. Its motto is: ordered today, delivered tomorrow!

After more than 15 years, Machinefabriek Molendijk is taken over in 1999. Under the new owners, Molendijk experienced unprecedented growth: the number of employees expanded and the work pieces produced became increasingly complex. The company has now grown so large that it is already looking forward to moving to new premises on Noorsestraat in Kaatsheuvel in 2004.

Twice as big. That's Molendijk's new premises, but not only are the premises twice as big, the plans are bigger too. Molendijk is the first company in the Netherlands with a Chiron Mill 2000 machining centre. This advanced CNC machine is capable of machining five faces of a workpiece in one fixture, unique for its time. At this time, the company focuses only on producing ferrous and non-ferrous semi-finished products.

From 1 January 2021, Machinefabriek Molendijk BV will continue under the name 'Smart-M BV'.

Why? Because Smart Manufacturing comes naturally to us. Following market developments and continuously innovative technologies has been in our DNA for many years. With a view to the future and our relations outside the Netherlands, we have chosen an international name in which we deal "smartly" with the possibilities our company has to offer. Smart-M, a name in which the M stands for Manufacturing and Machining (Technology Industry), but also for Milling (and turning), Measuring, Meeting people and "Made in Holland".

Smart-Moving

We are getting bigger and bigger products to transport. Previously, we had to outsource this, but that is now a thing of the past.

From today, Smart-M can transport up to 6 pallets in its new 400x180cm trailer. Adding to that, our van can carry 4 pallets and 4+6 makes 10. So a whole lot of pallets, which we prefer to deliver to you!

Metals Agreement

Together with other companies, industry associations, government and civil society organisations, we signed the covenant 'Together towards responsible metal chains'.

The aim of the covenant is to promote international corporate responsibility. We do this by reducing human rights and environmental abuses in the metals sector.

Overview in planning

Party at Smart-M, as from July we will start planning with vPlan! 🎉

In recent months, we have been looking for systems that fit our vision within Smart-M. One of these systems had to be a clear schedule for the planners, but also for the users.

During this search, we came into contact with Vplan. Vplan is easy to use and links up with our ERP system. With vPlan, we hope to get an overview of our planning. We will not only plan production, but also sales opportunities, quotations, work preparation, outsourcing, transport, logistics and camming.

We also have planning boards for internal processes, for example planning for social media and to reserve rooms.

The advantage in vPlan is that we can plan at both human and machine level. This gives us a lot of freedom, but also a clear overview. In addition, vPlan allows us to analyse our data and see where we can make improvements.

We found the contact with vPlan very pleasant. The implementation only took two half days and the training provided by vPlan was also very clear.

We are going for a great collaboration, with lots of planning fun!

Fresh to work at the office

A tidy office, a tidy head.

Over the past few weeks, we have been busy cleaning up the office. Smart-M's archive still consisted of documents from 2004 and older. We said goodbye to these and in their place was the above banner.

The office now looks a lot more spacious and has a fresh look again. We look forward to seeing you soon at our renovated office!

New colleague

Welcome Arjan

Party at Smart-M, because we have added a new colleague!

Arjan will join our team as logistics officer.

My name is Arjan Kik, I am 49 years young and live in ***. I have been happily married to Karoline for over 26 years and am the proud father of Anne, Roy and Max. For the last 25 years I have been travelling around Europe on a truck, with great pleasure. Now it's time for something different. I get the chance to work at Smart-M, and I am extremely looking forward to it. 1 June I will start in transport, logistics and some other facets.

New machine

Platinum Sideloader

In summer 2021, we will get a new robot at Smart-M. It will be BMO's Platinum Sideloader.

The Platinum Sideloader is a compact and enclosed high-capacity robot automation for automatic loading of starting materials or semi-finished products in our Acura.

The robot features a pallet loading module. This module allows multiple fixtures to be inserted into the machine by the robot. This allows unmanned machining of multiple product sizes by the CNC machine.

Our current robot will join the Hedelius. This robot will be given a BMO jacket. This means that both robots will run on the same, easy, software.

This also means that we currently have three robots for our milling machines.

New colleague

Welcome Thijs

Party at Smart-M, because we have added a new colleague!

Thijs will join our team as commercial work planner.

My name is Thijs Smit, 31 years young and happily married to Gilia for almost 2 years. In my spare time you can find me on the football pitch or in the gym ( crossfit ) and as soon as the corona rules allow, we like to travel around the world. I also travelled a lot for my previous employer Lion in Baarle-nassau, which is an international company that makes products for firefighters to train as safely and realistically as possible. Here, I worked as a work planner and sales engineer and was partly responsible for the design, drawing, implementation and commissioning of the projects.

Monday 3 May 2021 I will start I as a commercial work planner and look forward to meeting you in person 😉

Since April, there has been a Playstation in our canteen. Of course, the Playstation is meant to have fun, but did you know that research has shown that gaming makes for even better team-building.
